| Name | Halle |
| General information | Halle on the river Saale is the biggest town in Sachsen-Anhalt. Halle is the only city in Germany to have an opera house of such calibre due to its commitment to operatic excellence. Georg Friedrich Haendel was born in Halle in 1685. The famous son of this city provided wonderful music for his hometown, such as the annual Haendel festival. Halle also offers many leisure activities. Due to the fact that the town was barely touched in the Second World War, almost the whole town centre was spared, including numerous beautiful buildings from the beginning of the century. Halle is an attractive mixture of modern new buildings and restored old buildings. |
| Studying conditions | The present Martin-Luther University used to be two universities. One was founded in Wittenberg in 1502 and the other in Halle in 1694. Both of them have had an extremely varied history, full of ups and downs. Due to its long history, the university is closely intertwined with the town of Halle. It has grown steadily and slowly spread itself across the whole town centre. Many of the institutes are located in the old villas and historic buildings. However, many buildings have been built or completely restored for the university. Many of the institutes and clinics have been refurbished and have the most up-to-date working conditions and technical equipment. |
