General informationGoettingen is in the southern part of Niedersachsen, half-way between Bonn and Berlin. Nestled in the hills between Weserbergland and Harz, Goettingen is famous for its beautiful countryside through which the "Holiday route" of Germany passes on its stretch from the Alps to the Baltic Sea. Numerous historical personalities have lived in Goettingen, including Otto von Bismarck. Goettingen is not only a venerable university town but also boasts a lively and romantic atmosphere which is certainly the case in its historical Old Town. You can visit the most kissed girl in the world, the "Gaenseliesel", in front of the old Town Hall. According to tradition, when a student passes his doctor's degree in Goettingen, he must kiss the "Gaenseliesel". Only by doing so, can he obtain the full title of his profession. You can also have lots of fun in Goettingen in the many bars and restaurants as well as the very lively nightlife.
Studying conditionsThe university of Goettingen was founded in 1734 and during the course of time has obtained a world-wide reputation in many areas Numerous Nobel prize-winners have studied or taught in Goettingen. The University dental clinic is integrated into the main university clinic which covers all areas of medicine. This clinic is even famous outside Germany for its excellent research centre and capacity of 1,500 beds. There are about 4,000 dentistry students in Goettingen altogether and 330 of them come from abroad.
