| General information | Bochum was given the city charter in 1321. However it really soared to important heights in the Ruhr area during the years of the great boom in the coal mine and steel industries in the last century. These branches of industry still strongly influence the character of the city, lending a special charm. There have been no coal mines in Bochum for almost 30 years. The steel industry is also of no importance anymore - where once the corner pub was a hub of activity for the coal miners, is today a rock-cafe´, bistro or disco where students, actors and inventors meet. |
| Studying conditions | Research is of great importance in Bochum's dental course. Nowadays the college and technology-centres are outstanding landmarks of this town. In fact new technologies and science are very much the in- thing in dentistry here.
