NameKiel
General informationLocated in Schleswig-Holstein, Kiel is the only main district town directly by the sea, namely the Baltic Sea. As a result, the town has a strong maritime atmosphere, giving it a special charm of its own. One can enjoy short trips to nearby Denmark and Scandinavia. The biggest sailing regatta in the world takes place here every year. It is known as the "Kiel week" and a must for those who visit.
Studying conditionsThe Christian- Albrecht University is one of the classic universities in Germany. Prominent scientists like Max-Planck, Heinrich Hertz and Hans Geiger (inventor of the Geiger counter in Kiel, 1928) have taught in the university. The medical faculty was established in the 18th century and has a long, successful history. Although old in years, the Christiana-Albertina is a modern university today. The buildings were almost completely destroyed in the second World War and rebuilt on the outskirts of the city thereafter. The university clinic is the only part of the "Old University" to remain near the city centre.
