| General information | Erlangen is located in the heart of Franconia and is very famous as a university town with important industry. The city is relatively small with around 103,000 inhabitants. The historical Old Town attracts many tourists every year. Erlangen also boasts beautiful surrounding countryside and the opportunity to enjoy different leisure activities. In addition to this, cosy inns and a colourful mixture of bars and bistros are also fun for visitors. |
| Studying conditions | The Friedrich-Alexander University of Erlangen-Nuremberg is very conscious of tradition as well as modern age and has one of the widest ranges of courses in Germany. The university's tradition is, however, open to social and technological changes. It is the second largest university in Bavaria, with eleven faculties - nine of which are in Erlangen and the other two in Nuremberg - 250 professors and 12,000 employees altogether. The university also plays an important role in research and teaching outside Franconia.
This ever-growing university is very much a central part of life in Erlangen which used to be solely a university town. Most university buildings are therefore in the town centre, while the campus is located in the southern part of Erlangen. |
