NameFrankfurt
General informationSince the Middle Ages, this former free city on the River Main has developed into one of the most important trading centres in Europe. It was a main crossroad on the European trade route and for centuries the coronation city of the German Emperors. The skyline of Frankfurt is breathtaking at night: the many glass buildings and skyscrapers in the financial centre could even compete with American cities. "Mainhattan" also offers numerous cultural treasures, such as the opera or many famous festivals like the "Mainuferfest". However, culinary delights are accompanied by "Handkaes' mit Musik" (a strong smelling German cheese) and "Aepplwoi" (a speciality drink) to satisfy every taste.
Studying conditionsThe endowed university became a state university in 1967. However, the Johann Wolfgang Goethe University endured some changes due to the withdrawal of the city's financial support: at the same time the traditional five faculties - law, medicine, philosophy, natural sciences as well as economics and social sciences - were divided into 19 special fields. Along with organisational restructuring, came the reform of teaching material and form. Frankfurt has one of the ten largest universities in Germany and is proud of its world-wide reputation in medical research and teaching.
